Özet

This study aims to investigate educators’ reading behaviors and motivation during the COVID-19 pandemic with respect to certain variables. Subjects of this cross-sectional study were recruited from 319 educators (233 teachers and 86 faculty members) working in various regions of Turkey. The data of the study were collected using the Information Form and the Adult Reading Motivation Scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS v. 22 and the analysis revealed that 39.6% of the educators who participated in the study read more and 16.9% read less than they read before the epidemic. The genres mostly preferred by educators during the pandemic were found to be fiction, scientific writings, think pieces, personal development, and poetry, respectively. Statistically significant difference was found in the “efficacy” sub-dimension of reading motivation which indicates academicians got significantly higher scores from teachers. Women’s reading motivation in the “identity” sub-dimension was found significantly higher than men. Significant differences were obtained in the “identity”, “competence” and “success in other fields” sub-dimensions of the reading motivation of the educators with respect to their reading frequency during the pandemic. The results indicate that educators’ motivation to read was influenced by individual factors along with this truly extraordinary circumstances of COVID-19 pandemic
