Özet

High altitude-related medical disturbances are generally accepted as high altitude illnesses and include both acute and chronic conditions. Our objective in this chapter is to give the readers a brief description of the most seen and life-threatening high altitude emergencies along with their pathophysiology, management, and therapeutic approaches. Rarely seen high altitude urgencies-emergencies, non-emergent and chronic conditions are beyond the scope of this chapter. High altitude emergencies typically associated with ascent to altitude include acute mountain sickness (AMS), high altitude cerebral edema (HACE), and high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). In this regard, principal physiologic and pathologic processes, diagnosis, and management of high altitude emergencies known to be predictable and preventable will be reviewed according to the current literature.
