This study aims to examine the emotional and cognitive reflections of earthquakes on high school students who experienced earthquakes. The study group consists of 14 students, 6 of whom are female and 8 of whom are male. The study is based on the phenomenological design, one of the qualitative study designs. The data of the study were collected with a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. The qualitative data obtained in the study were analyzed with the content analysis method. As a result of the content analysis, it is seen that the participants define the earthquake phenomenon in two categories: psychological and material. It was concluded that the participants experienced multiple losses, primarily family members and relatives, in the earthquake. In addition, it was concluded that the participants experienced feelings such as fear, surprise, sadness, helplessness and guilt during the earthquake process, and had some negative thoughts such as constantly thinking about the earthquake moment and thinking about death. Finally, it was concluded that the participants tried to cope with the negative feelings and thoughts experienced after the earthquake with a fatalistic approach, acceptance, social support and optimistic approach. It is considered a remarkable finding that the participants approached the earthquake phenomenon with an optimistic approach. The results obtained were discussed in the light of the literature.
