Özet

The middle-income trap is the condition in which a country's growth slows after reaching middle income levels. The slowness in the growth of GDP per capita may be an indicator of middle-income trap for Turkey. Several reasons may exist for a country to be in middle-income trap. Utilization and assignment of resources and capacity are the leading factors of a possible trap. In this paper, we attempted to analyze the capacity distribution of Turkish manufactures by the technology level. Capacity reports, the technical documents that identify fields of production and production capacity annually, were used for this analysis. Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey publishes the capacity report statistics of Turkey annually. In these statistics, there are four main industry categories defined according to technology type. These categories are; high technology, mid to high technology, mid to low technology and low technology. It has been shown that Turkish manufacturing industry is heavily stands on the low technology. A further policy implementation is required to increase the share of high technology industries among all industries. Thereby, Turkey may stay far from the middle-income trap.
